9i patchset 5 installation. Can 9i base be "copied" over?

Am having problems applying patchset 5 to a 9.2.0.1 home.

I've got 2 databases running on 9.2.0.1. I'm not interested in upgrading them. I just wanna install a new 9.2.0.5 home.

    Here's what I did.

    1) "Copied" 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.5. I didn't "install" it. Set up environment.
    2) Installed 10g installer
    3) Change OraInst.loc to point to new Inventory location.
    4) Tried to install patchset 5 to this new 9.2.0.5 home.

But the darn thing somehow still looks/writes at the old inventory location..and ends up saying there is no patch that need to be applied to this home.

Is step 1 alright? Do I need to "install" the 9i base?

The way I do it (and I know works) is:
Install 9.2.0.1 in a seprate $OH from the Installer as a software only install. Then, I apply the 9.2.0.5 patchset. When I am ready to apply the patches to a DB, I just change the $OH in /var/opt/oracle/oratab, startup, run catpatch.sql and go. This way, I can leave the inventory alone and don't have to "trick" oracle to do anything.

also, don't forget to move the oraInstall.loc to somewhere else or rename it.
    Oracle it's not just a database it's a lifestyle!

it is if you're using the same userid and who owns the orainventory.

I don't think so. Just name your $ORACLE_HOME something different.
