    Exclamation CPU requirment

Does CPU performance has great impact of Oracle 9i performance?
I am evaluating two machines. One is P4, 3.2 GHz with 1 GB RAM. The other one in P4, 2.26 Ghz with 512 M RAM. How can I show that the first one is better than the other in using Oracle?

All things equal, you shouldn't have to ride a bike to tell that a Honda CBR 1100 will outperform a CBR600 on the tracks anyday.

PS : Okay, sarc apart - M1 has more memory and horsepower than M2. It's a nobrainer. If you wanna 'take it to the tracks' - run stress tests.

I can't do any test, because I don't have the machines. We are planning to buy one of them. Of course, I want to buy M1, but my boss would ask me "why". Therefore, I would like to know the impact of CPU in using Oracle.

Is this a high school project or something?

    Hi Allison

Oracle runs faster on P4 as well as quake runs faster on p4..:-)

That totaly depends what your are doing on your DB. But a "server" with 1 GB of RAM will certainly be a better choice then one with only 512MB.

In a properly tuned OLTP system, you would not see much difference in a 2.4Ghz and a 3.2 Ghz box. Most likely your biggest bottleneck will be I/O throughput. In a poorly tuned system, yes, CPU speed does matter.
