It all depends on where you want the error to be generated, but yes, either way you have a space problem. I take care of this problem by having monitoring software that knows how close the actual file size is to the maximum file size and determines when to add another data file.

What monitoring software ? And can you desc. your env./os etc so that I can try to eval. it for my shop ?
