You took export from 9i DB and tried to export the same sump into 8.1.6.
Try the following
1. Take export from 9i(sales) DB using 9i EXP utility.
2. From the same server (Sales 9i) import data into 8.1.6 using same 9i IMP utility.

That is not correct. To go from 9i to 8i, use export of the 8i against the 9i database, and use import from 8i to import into the 8i database.
If you wanted to go from 8i to 9i, you would use 8i export to create the dump file from the 8i database, and then use the 9i import to import into the 9i database.

1. Take export of 9i database using 8i export utility and
do import in 8i database using 8i import utility.
2.
is IMP-00010 Not valid export file , header failed verification
The error may be because if u have tranferred the dump file thru FTP then it should not be in binary mode it should be in ANSI.
Thanks

ummm a dump file is a binary file
-
Dump file is not a Binery file, I mean to say is at the time of transferring file thru FTP, FTP may treat the file as Binary or ANSI.
In case the dump file considered as binery then at the time of importing it may give the IMP-010 error.
