I realised that you can run . /runInstaller from either the $ORACLE_HOME/bin and also from the location of the oracle software on CD or the directory where the software is downloaded and unzipeed. What is the difference between these 2 ways of running . /runInstaller
if its the same version of the software then nothing - runInstaller in $ORACLE_HOME/bin is usually a soft link to oui/install or something like that. The only difference is when you have a cd for a newer version. If they are the same, the disk one will be quicker as reading from disk is usually quicker than reading from a cd
