    LMT administration

    Hey guys,
we just inherited a datawarehouse environment since the dbas got fired. anyways, I noticed that we have some tablespaces with 2 extents left..They are locally managed. This 1 tablespace is 7.4gb in size and its largest extent is 262Megs and it has 1.448gb in usable space. In this case would it coalesce the tablespace? I am worrid that it will cause errors..

I noticed that our temp tablespace which is 64gb in size has 1 percent space left and it is LMT..any recommendations?

    thanks

whats the extent management policy, auto allocate or uniform extents?

Can you not make it bigger - also temp is ok full, will get back the space as you need it (unless you are hitting it badly)

Also why did the dba's get fired

You can colesce the tablespaces any time...it will not error out.
About Temp tablespace no need to worry..you will get back all the space..
BTW..such a huge transaction without cummit?...talking about Temp space usage...
    Thanks,

I cannot believe a (call himself) Senior DBA

    http://forums.dbasupport.com/forums/...fo&userid=1432

    asking these so basic questions!!!

What errors are you worring about? Since when coalesce would cause errors?!?!

Dont you know LMT temporary tablespace almost always shows space used and they are reused over and over again?!?!?!

    Better change your profile please!!!!

How about "read the documentation on temporary tablespaces"? That'd help.

simple thought should say "what am i doing with 64GB Temp TS & is it really required?"

We have 1 TB DB with just around 10GB Temp TS size..

Maybe they have a 64Gb temp space because they, or their predecessors, didn't read the documentation, and kept adding more data files to the temp space because it "kept filling up".

Let us not worry about his past..let us give them some suggestion..
so that he will learn. Experiance comes by breaking..

You know what would be a great way of learning? Reading the documentation!

Especially if you are replacing a bunch of DBA's who just got canned -- possibly through breaking stuff.
