    Solid State Drives ?

OK, early days yet to have a big db on solid state drives . . .

. . . but how about online redo logs? We want small, fast, independant and (preferably) cheap drives:

[wild idea] USB2 is claiming up to 400 Mbits/s and you can get 128Mb memory sticks at $50-100 with a claimed transfer rate of 16Mbyte/s. Could we soon be using solid state for redo and control files? [/wild idea]

Can any hardware specialists tell me why it's not just around the corner?

I thought if I could get the redo on solid state the rest could go on 78rpm disks with fibre needles - and a horn, no tubes

Hi Dave, thanks for the link.

No I'd not seen it. Gratifying to see Morle put redo at the top of the list. Interesting that he talks in terms of single SSD - I think be I'd be happier with redo multiplexed over two devices.

He is aiming a bit higher then me (apparently 4Gb at approx $70K). I am still wondering if the more modest hardware could be useful for those of us that don't work for the US govt!
