Uninstall 8i from Win XP laptop - problem SERVICES

A user has attempted to uninstall Oracle 8 from an XP laptop. The services were running and instead of deleting the databases, he used Uninstaller to uninstall Oracle software first.

There are now Services for the database still running or trying to start up on XP. Datafiles are still in the OS but when I try and delete them I get an error: Oracore8.dll is in use.

How can I clean this laptop up? I want to remove all trace of Oracle 8 and the databases (OS files and XP services etc).

Oracle's solution to this is to put the machine in the crusher and buy a new one

According to Metalink, the only way to get rid of all the services is to edit the registry (OUCH!). If you can't get them to stop with the Service applet, this plus a reboot may be the only way.

Can I not stop them from the command line? Using ORADIM or similar?

    Something like:

    net stop "OracleServiceSID"
    net stop "OracleO817TNSListener"

I've managed to stop the services, I want to DELETE them. Usually deleting the DB with the DB Config Assistant does this for me. But the DBCA is not available as Oracle has been uninstalled!

You will have lost oradim, which would normally be the way to delete the SID services. In any case the listener etc have to be deleted from the registry by hand (elegant eh?).

    Look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services

Deleting the Registry entries for the services deletes the services - fine.

But when I come to delete the OS folders with the Oracle files in I still get the 'ORACORE8.dll' file in use error. It lives in the ORA_HOME - bin folder. How can it be in use? How can I delete these files as I want to install 9i to a seperate home and I don't want any of the 8i files left in the OS.

rename the oracle folder, reboot the machine, and delete the folder.
