Disabling CPU's for Oracle on win2K

    Dear members,

We have 4-node Oracle RAC with 8-cpu each on win2k. We would like to disable 4 CPUs per node.

    Questions:

    1) Can this be done through Oracle? and How>

    2) Can the CPUs be disabled through the win2K O/S, and how?

    3) Is unplugging the CPU's from the mother board a good option?

Please compare and contrast these options for me...anxiously awaiting your help.

    Thanks!

Yank them out of their socket or call the box's tech support to do it for you.

Why are you doing this? Too much processing power?

    More help!!

Some windows 2K experts say pulling them out of the box will need some additional hardware to terminate the empty cpu slots that are pulled out. Is this right?

Also - I found an oracle windows registry parameter ORACLE_AFFINITY which allows one to restrict Oracle processes only to certain CPU's...

Please advice the best method...anyone out there with experience on this type of project?

    Thanks again!

If this is a licensing issue then you had bettercheck with Oracle Sales to makesure that these options are "approved" by them. If they say that the ORACLE_AFFINITY method is not acceptable, then that'll kind-of help you.

That depends on the hardware. The few Intel-based servers I have set up arrived with one CPU and the other slots filled with terminators - I tend to keep such things; do you?
