    27 gig .TRC file!!??

    Hey boys and girls.

    Oracle Version 9.2.0.3.0
    OS Windoze 2000

Well, this morning I net-oped into one of my production boxes only to discover that the D:\ drive was full and we had 0 (count 'em zero) bytes free. After cursing the developers for using up the hard disk I discovered that we had a runaway trace file that was growing at about 6 gigs an hour. We killed most of the inactive session but it kept on going. The sev 1 tar with oracle yeilded nothing substancial.
Finally had to re-boot and that solved it.

I was just curious if anyone else has encountered something like this before.

Probably a damn developer doing a level 12 10046 trace...

You know you can limit the size with max_dump_file_size??

Thanks Jeff, I don't think the developers even know how to trace.
But...I could use this as an excuse to shoot a few.

    Wink

Before that shoot your Sys Admin who doesn't set a threshold value and alerts for disk usage in Production box.

you should set MAX_DUMP_FILE_SIZE to a decent value

We already set the dump size accross the board, this will help with a runaway process but not prevent it. Can't really blame the sys admin since we don't really have on for the windoze boxes.

I'm just wondering what caused this. We had to delete the .trc file since it was basically useless and we needed to free up space on the box. Weird!!

Thanks again guys. My new S&W 686 will be arriving shortly.

and what kind of trace file is that by the way?

if it's 10046 or sql_trace then someone set MAX_DUMP_FILE_SIZE to unlimited at session level or it's a trace file which has been used many times (by many sessions using same PID)

Just read the trace file, it will tell you what was going on.
