Linux Installation
Hi DBAs,
A happy new year to everyone.
I am new into Unix environment, my db is running in Win NT and test db is on Win2000.
I would like to install a Linux OS in my test db and my management is under discussion to change the OS.
Can anyone let me know the installation details or any website to download to get the info.
I heard that the Linux OS can be downloaded from net. Is this true.
Thanx in advance.

redhat
hi
I think you lost the chance of downloading RedHat Linux from their website as now they have started charging for the same. It was freely available previously from their website.
I insist on redhat distribution, as Oracle is closely working with them on various projects. Also you could buy a RedHat Bible and get the software cds free.

worth noting Oracle (enterprise edition 9i) is only certified on RedHat Enterprise Linux 2.1 / 3 which you need to pay for anyway

Hi.
I use Fedora (fedora.redhat.com) Linux. I run Oracle on this using the following method:
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/...nOnFedora1.php
It's not a supported configuration but it works fine.
Cheers

[1]Installing linux whether version 8, or 9 is not really a big trouble. With Anaconda you get all the GUI install help to install it. Go to http://rhn.redhat.com/ and get an account and also a subscription(20$ for 6 months, there are other subscriptions as well). That way you not only can download the *.iso but also keep your system up-to-date.
[2] Install all versions of oracle 8i,9i on 8 and 9i 0n 9 , just to get a good feel of the installation procedures. Fedora, as Tim pointed out is the shape of things to come(Redhat wants to approach the corporate with a better OS, read: less patch-ups like the case with Redhat Linux). Download it as well from http://fedora.redhat.com
, Check out Tim's install instructions in How-To Forums, I have also put my Install 9i on Redhat 9(Pando has provided a link for a pdf version done by Howard Rodgers on that issue, with all the GUI bells and whistles.)
[3] If you have problems you can post them in the How-To forums or better yet dig deeper, hunt your specific problems on the google.
[4] Also try to download SUSE 9.0 as it is also (after it's aquisition by Novell) going to be in the running. Debian is also good.(very stable if I hear from my neighbour who works on debian for the gov. here)
Also get a good beginner's book for linux administration, networking, security(Try amazon.com).
Good luck with linux. Yes it's coming closer...
And a happy new year to you too
Cheers!

Tom Bisset has done excellent work in writing excellent HOWTOS on Oracle/Linux (far surpassing tldp.org howtos IMHO).
Cheers,
