Tivoli Storage Manager - Oracle Backup

    Hi all,

We are using Tivoli Storage Manager to store our backups. Currently, we are using a script based solution. This is working, but we cannot write directly to tape. I have to copy to disk, then copy to tape (TSM). So I need to have a 1 to 1 space requirements for the entire database. Db is growing too large for this.

I am under the impression we need to purchase an additional agent to write directly to tape. This agent requires the use of RMAN. something else we are not familiar with.

Anyone use TSM? How are you completing backups, rman?

    Thanks,
    Kathy

Hi, we use TSM and RMAN. The piece you are missing is TDP for Oracle (also a Tivoli Product). It's the Media Management Layer that allows RMAN to write directly to tape.

    Hope that helps!

Once you get the hang of RMAN, you will never want to go back to a scripted solution.

Got to agree with marist. I'm implementing it at present but on the test lan the backup/recovery times were excellent compared with our historical method of exports etc.
    cheers
