    Question Listener Log Question

What does the UNKNOWN status mean in the listener log?

    Service "MYDB" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "MYDB", status UNKNOWN, has 2 handler(s) for this service...

    Re: Listener Log Question

    Hi,
This normally happens in Oracle 9i.
The status will show as "UNKNOWN" if there is a SID_DESC under the
    SID_LIST section in the 9i listener.ora file.
The SID_LIST in the listener.ora file is not required.
One of the reasons why Oracle recommends not using one, is because it
may cause un-necessary overheads on the listener process.
The SID_LIST section only needs to be used for instances such as PLSExtProc. It is not normally a problem having the instance duplicated in the SID_LIST, but it is preferrable not to have it.
The reason you have other instance registrations taking place with the listener is due to the automatic registration. When the instance starts it seeks out and registers wtih a listener running on port 1521 unless the local_listener parameter is set in the init.ora or spfile.

    Thanks
