I recently did the upgrade for AIX 5L.
Make sure your SGA is at least 400MB, with 150 MB for the Java Pool and 150 MB for the Large pool (I think, see the README.)
Basically, it looks like Oracle will/now needs at least a 512MB SGA to run okay.
Also, I always find at least 1 OS library our admin's haven't updated.

The instructions (for solaris anyway) state that you have to upgrade the installer before you apply the patch.

If you are referring to 9.2.0.4 then it was effortless on Solaris if you follow the readme instructions.
Linux is a whole other kit-and-kaboodle!
Don't get me started

hmm, I actually found Linux easier than Solaris...

9.2.0 was fine on install, it was the patch that caused me grief.
I know little regarding Linux.
I believe the difficulty was that it was Red Hat Linux 9 and Oracle only supports version 7? Does that sound right?
So, I had to do a few tweaks here and there.

Hmm, I did it on RH9 and RH2.1AS without issue. However, I try to keep my boxes up to date as best as I can...
