What performs the Check point in the absence of CKPT process ?

If it were possible to read between the lines of a one line post I'd guess that you're saying you are experiencing a Checkpoint-less instance?
In which case - I'm flummoxed.

There is no separate checkpoint process in 7.3 Database. By default LGWR will do the checkpoint. If you find the LGWR is over loaded you can enable separate checkpoint process by setting the parameter (checkpoint_process). 8.0 onwards, by default, the checkpoint process is separate from LGWR. see this

Hmmm... thats a nice thing to know that CKPT was optional before 8.0

Yes, I'll have to bear that in mind if i ever downgrade from 9.2
