    Hi,

    I use Oracle 8.1.5 standard edition. When I try to create function based index, it says feature not enabled. Is this feature not included in the standard edition, or there is some parameter that needs to be set so this feature is enabled?

    Hi,

    Function based indexes are available in 8.1.5 Enterprise Edition (I think also the Standard Edition but not 100%).

    What is the value of the 'COMPATIBLE' parameter in the init.ora file?

    If this is not set you may not be able to use new functionality of 8i - As the default is 8.0.0.
    This must be set to be able to use the new functionality of the software.
    Ensure your system will not have a problem with any of the functionality in 8.1.5 then set this parameter to 8.1.5

    ie in the init.ora file put the line :

    COMPATIBLE=8.1.5

    You will have restart the DB for the change to take effect then you should be OK for function based indexes (Ensure the users have the execute privilege on the function being used in the index!!)

    Hope this helps
