    Unhappy

I have a payroll database on oracle 8.0.5 on windows nt 4.0,
i need to upgrade to 8.1.6 since the new version of the payroll
    application requires this.
The database size is around 5gb.
What would be the time frame taken to upgrade from 8.0.5 to 8.1.6?
what are the things that i should consider and do before upgrading ?
what are the steps to do the upgrade ?
do i have to upgrade client software (net8 etc) too ?
precautions to be taken , problems that could occur ???

If any of you have had the experience of doing the upgrade , please let
    me know.

    Thanks in advance !

    Awaiting your responses

    Option:
    1. take export AND cold backup
    2. install 816, configure db
    3. import

Time frame is dependent on many variables. Don't think you need an upgrade of the client s/w.

    Thanks Halo.
But one of the DBA's i spoke to said that i dont have to configure or
do a import because the migration utility will do it for me.
Of course i plan to do a cold backup and a export of the database before
i plan to do the install.
Have you done this before ??

Haven't done it using a Migration Utility. If that's what you're gonna use, it's not going to take long, I'd say an hour or so. Check the Migration Guide or Metalink for relevant details.

The Migration utility works pretty good (used it on AIX and Solaris) but please still take COLD BACKUP
