Aha, so another error..

check if any alaises defined on the machine..

Check this file
Oracle\ Ora81\ Network\ Admin\ Tnsnames.ora and a .world would be appended to it...
See if the env var is local.

Check you sqlnet.log in the log directory of the network folder..


my error stack says this(for instance)...

Did you try to use the net8 connection test, thru the net8 utility? Try recomfiguring the net8 configuration and test again.

Thank you for your help.

The problem was terminal services. I got local access to the box and was able to use the new password from the newly gen'ed password file.

I immediately reset system and sys to something reasonable.
