Question To work at home through Internet.

To work at home through Internet.

We are working with oracle 8.1.7. Enterprise Edition and
I would like to know what I need to install or configure to work at Home and run some sql's in a remote database through Internet.

What do I need to configure in the Firewall ?
What do I need to configure in the database ?
What product do I need to install ?
What document I need to read about this.

    Thanks in advance,

    Fernando Gonzalez Franco.

You would need standard Oracle client software, plus some security stuff.

You would probably be accessing the db through port 1521, so that would have to be open on the firewalls.

I use "Norton Internet Security" on my own laptop for firewall, security and intrusion detection. It's kept me free of bad things while i've been permanently connected for months. It also helps to have a router you can hide your machine behind -- cuts right back on all the jerks trying to probe your system.

Why don't you just use your companies VPN? As a DBA they should be paying for your internet connection anyway
    Oracle it's not just a database it's a lifestyle!

Actually it's worse than that - the dialogue starts on port 1521 but can be redirected to a "random" port in the process.

    Search Metalink for "firewall"
(e.g. Doc ID: Note:125021.1 Subject: Oracle Connections and Firewalls).

Fortunately, there's workarounds for it of course.
