Edit the boot.ini file (OS specific file) and add
/3GB to this line:
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version 4.00"
as:
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT Server Version 4.00" /3GB
Cheers

And please, dont forget:
FAST=TRUE
in the init.ora... This will speed things up...

No, that was in version 8.1.6
And before that it was "jolly_fast=sometimes"
PS: I would create a 3Gig ramdrive and install Oracle into it. That's very fast, but you might need a UPS.
