EOF error when connecting from 8i to 9i DB

Platform: Oracle 9.2.0.4 on Windows 2000

When I try to connect from an 8i sqlplus client to the 9iR2 DB, I get:

    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

If I do tnsping, it's OK. There is nothing special in the DB's bdump or udump directories.

However, when I try it locally on the 9iR2 server with connect string specified, it's OK. It's also Ok when I connect from a remote 9iR2 client. I am sure in all cases they have the same spec in tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora.

To make things more complicated, I have another Solaris 8 based Oracle 9iR2 server to which both the same 8i and 9i clients can connect just fine. I also have another Windows 2000 based Oracle 9iR2, it's fine as well.

    Strange? Anybody experiences this problem?

    Thanks,

    Hi,
try to ping on the server, for say 15 - 20 Mins and see if the response is good.
I feel at some point, there is a network failure.

    ping ip -t
