    need help in being a dba

    hi all oracle gurus,
    Can anyone tell me or guide me step by step about what to do when i secure a oracle server. like documentation or scripts that would help me. how would one check for invalid objects in a database. what steps should one take to avoid potential problems and how to identify them etc etc


    any help would be gr8

    There are great threads out there that can you plenty of info to get started doing DBA tasks. Do a search for "Monitor" or "Monitoring" in the administration forum and you get links to docs about tasks such as those you have posted. Good luck.

    I recommend you first do what Mr. Hanky and jovery suggest and refrain from executing any 'tasks' of which you do not understand the purpose.

    You'll need hardware:

    - bottle opener
    - cork screw
    - new glasses (both beverage & optical)
    - a server you can break

    The last one is essential to my mind. I suspect Windows & Linux DBA's have the advantage that almost any PC on it's way out will do (I'm using a 200Mz/64Mb & 2Gb disk).

    Ha..Ha..Reading the posts on this one .esp. Mr.Poo(start drinking!) reminds me of jaded 60 yr.old hoes giving advice to teen sluts starting out...( I should know as I go for them now - cheaper than the $1000/night hoes I used to go for during the late 90's!)

    Anyway you have to wear a few hats:(or be knowledgeable in:
    -Sys Admin. on OS's u're gonna use
    -RDBMS/OO concepts
    -D/B setup/run/backup/recover procs.

    Start with a book called DBA 101 by Marlene Thierault from Oracle Press and go indepth into each of the concepts highlighted there!

    After a while you can the dish out advice.....to other aspirants!!
