I would hate to think how much money is wasted on marketing types sitting round a table trying to think of version names, whats wrong with 10? - It's easy - it comes after 9, it gives an easily reconisable increment in the product cycle and even most 2 year olds would understand the concept.

The question remains if the G stands for 10**9 or the gravitational constant, which is quite small.

If 10G is with a gravitational constant, then it will have a great tendency to go down.

Jeez, do I have to explain everything to you guys???? The name, 10G, reflects the combination of marketing and sales. 10G = 10,000, the cost of a license. The release name now matches the price. It's simple, offers a lot more naming options, and everyone knows what you're talking about with respect to versions. Oracle9iDS becomes Developer 5000. iAS becomes AS1000. See how simple that was? Now get with the program already.

    Is this an American thing?
    US: 1G = 1'000
rest of the world: 1G = 1,000,000,000 (as in GHz, Gb)

Just like US pints, gallons and tons - undersized!

Does that mean in the UK it will be branded as 10K?

    I suspect here G stands for "Grand" - 10G being 10.000$ aka 10grands ...

Got it! G stands for "Grid" - presumably what you barbecue steaks on (or what ever you caught in the "Net").
