Use 817 exp utility to export from 817 database. So also, use 9i imp utility to import the 817 exp dump file into the 9i database.

To perform EXPORT backup using 9i exp utility for an 8i database it is not possible.

    1. Use the export utility of Oracle 8.1.7 or still lower version exp utility and import using 9i import utility.
    2. If your upgrading to 9i, go for oracle 9i rel 2
i.e, 9.2.0.3 which is recent version. Since 9.0.1.0 is a bug product.

You cannot perform EXPORT Backup using higher version EXP utility to a database of Lower version.
