Data Centric approach can indeed solve a lot of your problems.
Centralizing your data will and can save you lots of money. I'm just(now) back from a good friends place where we're(me in my off time/weekend time)offering a centralized solution to an organization.

I just went over and sketched a simple view of what all he has to gain in terms of...
    tco
    roi

And just on the cost of managing the whole affair(remotely), he was saving more that 200K/yr. And mind you he's a small client.

My approach is, you offer a solution, make it work just the way you pictured it to your client.(So when you're sitting and offering solutions, you're damn sure of every option you offered).

And about bought too much? If you're happy, then the price was right!

The article looked to me like a piece of advertising for a company that has a heavy investment in JDO. The approach advocated appeared to be using the database as a bitbucket, and handling all logic, relationships etc. in persistent middle-tier objects.

I really oculdn't see what the problem that the fella had with centralized databases anyway. I may think that his approach blows chunks, but it would seem to be very compatible with data centralization.

Unless of course his company's business model is threatened by improved efficiency and reduced costs in corporate dbms's.
