8i won't Start from DBA Studio

I have installed Oracle 8i on a development server running RedHat 7.2. This server should be similar to a data server in production.

From DBA Studio, I have no problems with opening or shutting down the 8i database on the production data server.

However, after connecting to Oracle on the development server, when I try to Open the database, it fails during the "Starting up" stage.

Unfortunately, as a newbie, I have no idea how to resolve this, or even where to start from.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
