ORA 12545 error - Connect failed

I am running Oracle 8.1.7 on Windows 2000 Advanced server. When connecting from clients I am getting the following error:

ORA 12545 - Connect failed because host or target object does not exist.

TNSPING works fine, aliases are correctly configured and all this worked fine on Windows 2000 server config.

IP address is static; entry is also added to /etc/hosts file, network is fine?

(Ocassionally, i also get a packaged received failed error)

    Any pointers here?

    Thanks,

    Nizar.
