Exp from higer version to lower version
If i need to transfer data from a higher version to a lower version, you will need to use the export utility from the lower version database.
Say for ex, i need to export from 9.2.0 to 8.1.7
How can i use the export utility of 8.1.7 on the 9.2.0 machine.
Do i have to install the exp/imp components of 8i on 9i machine or is this has to be done using 8i client machine?
Can somebody avise me on this.

Well, look at the parameter for userid. You can set userid=username/password@SID. That is how you would/could connect.

Of course from an 8i client. Via Net8.

The rule on thumb is to always export with the lower version of the both db versions exp utility. Then import with the higher one.
So go to your 8i database, create a tns alias in tnsnames.ora to the 9i database, then use from the 8i to export the 9i db. In the export parameter file set this up: USERID=user/password@tnsname-9i-db .....
Once you are done, FTP the dump file to the 9i db, and import with the 9i imp binary.
Hope that helps,

hi
To export data from oracle 9i version to oracle 8i, configure tnsnames.ora (oracle 9i database), on either oracle 8i server or client which is in network with the Oracle 9i server. Run exp command from either of these with connect string as the newly defined connect string(Oracle 9i).
The dump file created will be compatible to Oracle 8i version. This dump file can be imported into Oracle 8i database.
I hope this solves ur problem.
