    dd dumps

    Could someone explain to me what the difference is between dd dumps and backup of a database? Thanks.

    DUMP is logical copy (copy only data and structure script) and backup is physical copy (all datafiles and control files, etc.

    Anyway.... dd is a program in Unix that will take your data from one device and copy it to another device. A dd will work just fine for a backup methodology as long as your database is down during the backup. The terminology for this type of backup is a "cold backup".

    Our database comes down on the weekends for cold backup. We do a cold backup and dd dump. If dd dump is a cold backup, why then do both cold backup and dd dump? Thanks.

    I usually use dd to backup things like the boot disk and the disk where the Oracle Software resides. Your sysadmins may be using dd to tape different disks than your database. The dd may be company policy for disaster recovery. Best to ask your sysadmins.

    dd is also a good choice for raw devices
