    About Recovery Manager RMAN

    Hi Dbguru's,

When we perform a recovery from a remote machine using RMAN, ie performing recovery in a target database from the catalog database, is that both remote and catalog should have the same configuration. For eg both should be in Archive log mode or No Archive log mode etc.

    >>>

if both requires should be either in ARchive or No Archive,
    my next question would be

what is the necessary of having catalog database as same as Target database, since the backup files are kept in target database itself.
    can you pls clarify it.

I hope the above questions are clear to you all.

The main purpose of Catalog database is to maintain info on

    a. Datafiles and archived redolog, backupset and backuppiece information
    b. Datafile copy information
    c. Archived redo logs and their copy information
    d. Tablespaces and datafiles on the target database information
    e. Stored scripts

These information is helpful incase your Target database crashes completely and u can rebuild it above info.
Even oracle says u can take backup of catalog database.

Then coming to your question there is no co-relatioin between modes of target and catalog databases and also their structure.IT is up to your backup and recovery strategy and design.
