Why IDLE_TIME profile option does not have any effect???

    Hi all,

To reduce peoblems of having too many INACTIVE sessions, I have set IDLE_TIME profile option in the DEFAULT profile with the value of 720 minutes i.e 12 hours. RESOURCE_LIMIT is also set to TRUE in the init.ora file and database has been bounced since then.

Still, I do not see if this really is working because I can still see old inactive sessions still sitting there. Some of them are even 4-5 days old.

    Could anyone help me please?

    Thanks in Adv..

Read about sniped sessions and how IDLE_TIME really works.

    Jeff,

Thanks for the link. They are not even converted to SNIPED sessions.

    select * from dba_profiles where profile = 'DEFAULT' and resource_name = 'IDLE_TIME'
    = DEFAULT IDLE_TIME KERNEL 720

    select name,value from v$parameter where name = 'resource_limit'
    = resource_limit TRUE

select profile from dba_users where username='APPS'
    = DEFAULT

    What's wrong?

    Thanks,
    Sam

I am sure you might have already checked . Does the users that are talking are created in Default profile or you may have more than one profile?? Just check in case . It should work.

    Hi Ragu,

Yes, all are assigned DEFAULT profile. Still, does not seem to be working.

    Thanks though.

I got a note in oracle tech net

A session will continue to show as idle even after the idle_time for that user, as specified in that user's profile, has expired. When the user attempts to run a transaction against the database after the idle_time has expired, the database will disconnect the user by terminating the session. After this, the session will no longer show in the output of the above query.
