2 Oracle homes
Hello,
I'm running 8.1.7. I would be installing 9.2.0 soon.
I would still like to keep the 8.1.7 home and install the 9.2.0 home
in another sub directory off the 8.1.7.
Can I install the 9i in the 8.1.7 subdirectory?
and still be able to run 8.1.7 and 9.2.0 databases?
So om my server, I would have something like this:
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7
/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0
and it would be no problem?
I'm reading some conflicting docs.

Are we talking about Unix or Windows:
You can here about lot conflicts on Windows not on Unix for having multiple versions of Oracle Homes.
On Unix, no issues and no conflicts AFAIK if you use seperate Homes and seperate home directories as you said.
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7
/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0
On windows though you qualify above requirements its hard to make things work just beacause its windoz
Seperate homes and path driectories for binaries MANDATORY irrespective of platform.

Yes you can. I got 4 homes running on one windows machine. But I prefered to have then in differnet directory not in sub directory. I got 8.0 and 8.1.6 in one hard disk and 8.1.7.3 and 9.1 on another disk on same machine . But when I prefered all services as auto startup it is taking forever to reboot . So I am starting all listeners and instances manuvally after the machine is up.
