Oracle Dataguard 8i: Unable To startup standby db after switchover

    Hi,

We've installed oracle dataguard 8i to make a standby database which resides on an aix 4.3.3/oracle 8.1.7.4 platform. Both production and standby platform are same, database ID's too.

We've succesfully deployed the dataguard and create standby database on standby host.

When we tried to make a switchover from prod system to standby, so that the roles swithed, switchover stops at step 11.2 ( which is creating standby controlfile and starting up standby database )

What can be done? Where can I get More infor about error?

    Thanks

What error are you getting? Can you post the error verbatim?

    Thanks.

Perhaps I'm confused by the names given to things by the marketing guys . . . but I thought Dataguard was for version 9 db's (and an 8i Standby was essentially "steam powered").

Is there an error in the sequence of actions here? I want to have my 8.1.7 Standby running (and as up-to-date as possible) long before I would need to make a switchover.

    RE: Error Messages

    Hello,

When I execute the 'switchover -m restart', following error message appears:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    DGDCTL> SWITCHOVER -m RESTART -v
Refer to /oracle/HVD/817_64/dataguard/log/switchover_HVD.log on dphankt for detailed information
    Would you like to continue?
    (Y)es or (N)o? y
    SWITCHOVER restarted at step 11
Step 11: Started: Mount New Standby dohankt
Substep 11.2: Create new standby controlfile failed: database nomount failure
Step 11: Mount new standby database failed
    ALERT: switchover restart failed

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this info enought to say something about the situation, or what logs you needed?

    Best Regards

    Smile switchover and switchback

I have reviewed the graceful switchover and switchback document.
    I have a question, I have a standby database in Oracle8i Release 8.1.7.3.0.
on AIX Version 4. Is graceful switchover possible?
When I do this 'alter database create controlfile as ' '
I'll be creating the script 'create controlfile script',
How do I do this 'reverse production to standby sites roles'?
Where can i get the script to the switchover and switchback?
    without using the Data Guard.

    Thanks.
