ora-01033 shutdown or initialization in progress

i have oracle 8.1.7 in windows NT.
I started the DB service and listener,

When i tried to login to sqlplus it threw
    the error
" ora-01033 shutdown or initialization in progress"

i also forgot my internal password , i am starting the db after long time.It was working fine before.

I restarted the machine and again restarted the service. But it throws the same error.

Is the string value true for the key ORA_%SID%_AUTOSTART in the registry under the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME???

If S...is the service getting started properly?
If S...then u shud not get that error....

Since u lost the password.First stop the service.Drop the service and passwordfile. Recreate the service followed by password file. Then try again to start the database.

    hi,

    thanks for the reply

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME\ORA_SID_AUTOSTART value is TRUE

I still do know why i get this error.

    I stopped the service.
Then i tried to invoke svrmgrl in cmd prompt.
    On invoking itself i got
    tnsprotocol adapter error.

    Any suggestions.

    akhadar,
how to drop the password file.

If that value is true...ur DB starts automatically..
If u r not facing any problem in starting the service...then ur DB shud have started....
If otherwise, u gotta problem in starting DB...

    Make the key value FALSE.
Start the service(now ur DB wudnt have started).
Put the NT user acc ( the logged user ) in ORA_DBA group.
Make changes in SQLNet.ora...change the authentication as SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
Now login using INTERNAL acc ( u dont need to spicfy pswd as authentication is NTS....am not sure with internal acc but with SYS as SYSDBA wud work with 9i )
    STARTUP

from svrmgrl instead of doing "connect internal/oracle", do a "connect internal/oracle@orcl" and you won't get the error.

For the password file : just delete it ( located by default under [ora_home]\datatabase\) and recreate it with a command like the following :
    C:\>orapwd file=d:\oracle\ora81\database\pwdORCL.ora password=internal

Once connected with SVRMGRL do a "shutdown abort" and then startup the DB with indicating the init file's path.

    hi guys,

    thanks for your replies.

Actually i checked the alert file now.
it reported that it was not able to locate a particular .ora file

So in svrmgrl it mounted the database, took the datafile offline and opened the db.
    It is working fine now.
As i started from the service i was not able to identify the problem and when i invoked the sqlplus as it threw ora01033 error i thought it could be someother thing.

Then i changed the internal password by loggin in as system

    Again thanks.
