Oracle services not starting on WinXP

I've installed Ora 8.1.5 on Windows XP. The Oracle_SID services are all marked for Automatic Startup.
When I switch on (It's a laptop) the Startup seems to be hanging, and the Services are marked as 'Starting' - not 'Started'.
I have to manually STARTUP each instance.

    Any suggestions folks?

Not sure if it's the same on XP but do you have the event viewer (as win2000/NT) this will show errors relating to service startup.

By the way I believe Oracle 8i is not certified with MS-XP, Oracle 9i is. Why don't you check out the certification matrix ?

Thanks Jim, I'd already managed to find that. What I can't find is specific info about certification for 8.1.5.0 (or indeed 8.1.7 and XP) as its now desupported (though we still run it).

Also what are the implications of running a combination of server and OS that's not certified? Is functionality not guaranteed?

I don't think certification testing was ever done for 8.1.5 or 8.1.7 on XP

Basically Yes, although you may find that non-certified combinations work but if you run into trouble availiable support is going to be very restrictive (if any)
