    Oracle Discoverer

Do I need to install Oracle9iAS before I can use this?

Can I just download the Discoverer and run it against a regular Oracle9i server or is the app server required?

The app server bombed on install to my Win2K machine because of dbname or hostname, not sure what the problem is there and wondering if I must fight that fight or can skip the app server.

    Thanks!

    hello there,

there are a couple of options with discover. you can use the client server version and connect straight to the database. quite simple to setup.

if you want web discoverer then you will need to install 9iAS with
discoverer it is a bit tricky to setup but you have the advantage of
web access but only for discoverer viewer. The administration still has to be done using a client/server gui.

It really depends on what you intend to do with your queries.

If this is only for a very few users or yourself, then the Client/Server version of Discoverer is more than adequate.

If you intend to distribute reports to your user base however, you are better to resolve the issues you are having with 9iAS as the Web Viewer is really very good for this.

Client server would be just fine, for single user, and if you need to distribute the reports, export it to excel.
