    dba's role in organization

    re: dba's role in organization
Does the dba position belong in the server/network group or in the application development group?
Should a dba only do work within the db, and the
server/network group do all the oracle installs?
Does anyone know where I can find statistics/reports or guidelines for what a dba position should be doing.
The dba position is currently doing all the oracle
installs and is in the application group but the server group thinks they should be doing the installs.
    thks

is the position of the server group justified through any problems that have cropped up in the past? What is the reasoning behind their opinion?

As Pando told you, it depends. I think that the DBA should work on both sides but should not eventually forget that (s)he is a DBA. Meaning: you can help on both sides but primarilly do the Oracle related jobs.

Here I have firm opinion: the DBA should install Oracle. Don't let some Unix guy do it in case you are able to.

Well, .. no. An Oracle DBA should install. If those server guys install Oracle, do they ask then the DBA what options to install, etc?

This all sounds like a political power-grab by one department over another. Seems like tnl has got himself into a dysfunctional working place.

    draft a document

Another idea would be to draft a document that outlines the specifics for installing Oracle in your environment. Outline what you want done and then get the respective managers to sign off.

Then it does not matter who does the work, but rather that they do it according to guidelines.
