Starting up DB on Windows XP

I have installed 9i on several Windows XP machines in my office. Whenever the database is started for the first time after the machine has been started, the startup takes upwards of 5-10 minutes. Anytime after that if I were to shutdown the db and start it back up again, the startup takes less than 1 minute. I have experimented on different hardware configurations and it's the same scenario. After the initial boot of the machine, the startup is slow.

Has anyone else experienced this? What can be done to correct this?

Do you make a shutdown normal/abort of your database before your switch off you PC? If not do it and check if the database is then starting up faster.
