This is my understanding, just wanted to confirm it:
if 1 of the 3 control files is deleted (or the disk that it is on, and its mirror goes bad) while the database is running, the database will not even write any errors to the alert log until shutdown time ?
At that time, will I have to abort the instance, fix the init.ora or copy the control file, and restart the database ?

You should not need to abort the instance, however you will need to either 'fix' the init.ora or get a new copy of the control file before you can restart the instance.
