What backup strategy do you have? If you are taking regular hotbackups then backup the archived logs as well immediately after hot backup and delete them.

    Hi ,
we are taking hot backup(control file, datafiles) to tape drive. We are not backing up the archive log files.

Backing up archive log files must be a part of any hotbackup. You can look for some scripts on this site to include archive log backup in your hotbackup script.
Think of moving to RMAN if your DB version is > 8.X
