install 9i R2 on Windows XP

    Hi,
I try to install 9iR2 on Windows XP, I get the following error:
'Error in writing to Directory C:\Temp. Please ensure that the directory is writable and has at least 32 MB disk space. Installation can not continue.'
I am sure the temp directory is writable. The user I am using has computer administrator privileges.
    Any help is appreciated.

From a checklist on installing Oracle on Windows:

Do you have at least 75MB of free disk space in C:\TEMP?
Oracle needs space in the TEMP directory as it installs. The Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) requires up to 75MB of space in the TEMP directory, as defined by the NT environment variables TMP or TEMP. Please note that moving the TEMP/TMP settings to another drive (non C:\) may not resolve this issue.

    Similar problem:

You may obtain an I/O error on C:\TEMP when the Installer has reached the point of Oracle product install.
    Solution Description
    --------------------
    Check the permisions on C:\TEMP.
1.- Go to Start/Program/Windows NT Explorer
2.- Put the mouse arrow on the directory C:\TEMP
    3.- Choose the properties option
4.- Remove the check mark from Read_only

    Thanks, Stecal,
I did what you suggested, but for read-only button, it can not be unchecked. I notice that all folders are read-only, though you can write to it. Is it new feature of Windows XP? I checked the temp file in temp folder, it is less than 32 MB. There must be somewhere saying the size can not be larger than 32MB. I installed oracle on NT, Windows 2000, never had problem before. Is there any way I can make sure that temp folder has at least 32 MB? Thanks anyone for help.

The space allocation of 75MB is not for the 8i version but for the 9i version when it is being upgraded from 8i to 9i within the same maching requires any such kind of pre allocation of memory?

    Just a suggestion required.
    your reply appreciated.

    Hi

Try changing the environment variable for temp.

On the desktop right click on my computer>properties>advanced tab>environment variables.

Chane the value of TEMP C:\temp to c:\DIR_NAME or E:\DIR_NAME and TMP c:\temp to c:\DIR_NAME or D:\DIR_NAME

Not sure about XP but works on NT and 2000.

This way you can make oracle use some other directory as temp dir.

I do agree there is nothing with the DIRECTORY name in as TEMP or
TMP, but do definetly carries a lot with the XP version.
The problem was actually while upgrading the database from 8i to 9i especially, the memory allocation comes into vogue.

Is there any limitation for 9i on XP OS?

    Thanks

    Thanks for all your help.
I tried to change temp to other directory, but it did not work. What I don't understand is why it just can not write more than 32MB in TEMP directory. There are Gigs free disk space.
By the way, I had no problem in installing oracle 9i R2 on Windows NT(ServicePack 5). one requirement with NT is the user who installs the software has to be administrator to the Server. The NT I installed with has 256MB RAM.
I tried to install 9iR2 on Windows 2000 Server, it throws the same error message of not being able to write more than 32MB in TEMP directory.
    Any help would appreciate.

Gigs free where? Not in c:\temp I'd bet. How big is your c:\temp directory?

    That is exactly my question.
I want to know who defines the size of TEMP directory. I would assume the TEMP directory could use as much as it is available to it. It never occurred to me before. By the way, my TEMP directory right now is 4MB. it could grow as large as less than 32MB. I want to know how I can change the parameter to, say 75MB.

Have you set an environment variable named TEMP that points to c:\temp?
