    Question Cannot allocate log. Archival required

    Hi Everybody,

    Happy Hoildays


    I running oracle 8.03 on winnt 4.0 box and get the following error message

    ORACLE Instance md - Cannot allocate log. Archival required
    Press to acknowledge message


    Can any one help please

    You need to add more redo log groups. The current redo logs are full and have not been archived when the systems is trying to use the log.

    Add new log group and it should resolve the issue.

    how do I add redo log files. I can not even log into the database

    sounds like LOG_ARCHIVE_START is set to false? is it, if it is you need to manually archive your logs, you should set this to true unless you have a specific reason to set it to false
