Is this a new database or one you have migrated?

I would recommend that you talk to the unix admin to find out
who the user PID 632 is. Also maybe you should check cdump and bdump for trace files. Its a long shot but did you configure your kernel Parms?

    Hi,
This was the Database Created with OMF parameters. First time,
the database created with OMF parameters, and i happened to shutdown the database to alter the CONTROL FILE parameter in the init.ora, and getting this error.

Even in non-omf databases also, i have faced the similar problems. After mount, when it tries to open the d/b; it gets terminated. I think there is some problem in 9i.

and the PID which is terminating the instance is oracle ie., the first server process.

and charecterset; i have never specified anything related to charecter set in my create database. I have left it the default setting.
