    Question 4 to 2 processors

    Hi,

Our oracle server 8.1.7 runs on W2K Advanced Server 4 processors.

    Question :

How keep the 4 processors and to do work oracle on only 2 processors.

    thanks for your help

So far as I know, SQL Server provides this feature.

You will probably have to limit this at the OS. I think your question would be answered better in a Windoz related forum instead of an Oracle forum.

    Unhappy

    objective :

keep 4 processor for running OS and application and run oracle
for license reason with only 2 processor

how attribute to oracle only 2 processors instead 4 .

it's a typical question concerning oracle's technical administration

if your oracle expertise can help me, many thanks

I guess the question is why are you trying to limit Oracle to 2 CPU's?

If it is because of performance reason then during peak operation you should pull up task manager on you server. You can set the performace display to show each processor separately. Chances are that you server's storage system is working much harder than the CPU's. Unless you are doing a lot of full table scans and or sorts your processors are probably not maxing out. I could be wrong but I am guessing that you won't see any benefit in trying to tell Windows how to manage the CPU's. If you are really concerned about performance get another SCSI controller and disk array and spread out the files. You could also look into memory utilization and see if more ram would give you a performance boost. Finally, I think that most people on this site would agree with the statement that the best performance gains can be achieved by tuning sql. Look for bad performing sql and tune it. Do some or all of the above and you may not be worried about telling the operating system how to manage the CPU's.

You seem to be saying that limiting Oracle to two CPU's is a valid tuning method. Is that true? and Would you do that on one of your production databases? I just wonder why someone would do this. Maybe I am missing something.

    Wink

    some precisions :

-Database is working perfectly (it's not a tuning question)
-Agree, you can configure W2k for assign 2 cpu for application

    but of oracle's side:
    -Difference between 4 and 2 cpu = 40 000$
    it's only oracle license question.

I've server W2K with 4 cpu but I want that oracle run with only
2 cpu. how configure oracle for it use only 2 cpu on this server
and to be ok regarding oracle license.
