Hmmm...
I don't understand the errors.. I was thinking, for the time being, just as a temporary solution, write a batch program to run every six days to automatically shutdown and startup at midnight

Hey...
tried a bit to find a possible cause.
Oracle 8.1.7.3 is a stable version with a lot of ORA-600 bugs fixed. Might be good to upgrade to that.
In any event its always advisable to raise a tar for these ORA-0600 errors with oracle before making a decision to upgrade.
P.S: It is a painless and simple process to upgrade from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7.3. Beleive me its very stable !!!
-Thanks

and 8.1.7.4 is a LOT more stable than 8.1.7.3

Are you truncating a table with CLOB column? If yes then is bug 1678963 that it is fixed in 8.1.7.2 and 9i.
