install question

dear all:

solaris runing oracle 8.1.6.3
I want to upgrade from 8.1.6.3 to 8.1.7.4
I install the software 8.1.7.0 under the diffrent $ORACLE_HOME
and I install the 8.1.7.4 product.jar under the /u01/oracle/product/8.1.7.4, but start select the product ,and the destination /u01/oracle/product/8.1.7.4, next ,but issue come
no patch find for /u01/oracle/product/8.1.7.4.0. why?

pls present solution

Are you applying the patch to the 8.1.7.0 base release?
