Oracle causes system to shut down at startup
Hi!
I'm using Windows 2000 professional Edition and have just installed Oracle 8 personal edition.
When I restarted my system, it would shut inexplicablly after I login (to Windows).
I believe this is being caused by some services(Oracle) that are automatically launched at Windows startup. I have made these services manual(Control Panel-Administration Tools - Services) instead of automatic. I haven't had the problem again. But when I manually start these services later and try to connect to Oracle, I get the "TNS timed out".
Can anyone suggest a way to avoid these issues and as my user id suggests, I'm a novice :-)
Thanks in advance
Sam

Check the software's compatibility with the OS.
If that's alright then remove all previous oracle installations and reinstall the software.

Compatability issue
I have installed the version for Windows NT/2000. But I'm using windows professional edition and not a windows server. Is that the issue?

You don't need the server version to install so that should'nt be your problem.
What version number are you installing?

Couple more questions:
1. Can you start the services once you have logged in? or does this cause the same shutdown effect?
2. Also are there any errors generated in the event logs?
3. Did the installation complete okay?
4. What processor is in the box i.e is it a P4

To answer u r questions:
1) No. The system does not shut down if I manually start the services.
2) Yes I did notice some errors in the Windows log and the following Oracle log files:
In the nmiconf.log file I find these messages:
Warning : No databases discovered
Warning : Error while sourcing third party discovery file nmiforms.tcl : can't read "env(ORACLE_HOME)": no such element in array
In the nmi.log file I find these messages:

3) There were no problems that I encountered when I installed. If I manually start the services, I able to connect sometimes ( to the database I created). But sometimes I get the error TNS: timed out.
4) I'm using a P3. Also I have just 128 Mb RAM ( I know I have to increase it :-)). Is lack of sufficient RAM the culprit?
I don't mind manually starting the services as long as I can get it to work. Is there a sequence in which I need to start the services?
Thanks in advance
