    Hash Function

I have a table which PK consists of 17 cols .
To reduce the possibility of DML performance problem , I want to find a way to reduce the number of PK cols . The best way I think is to make a new representive PK col which can be calculated from others.

Could anyone provide some thoughts ?

Just use a surrogate key and populate it with a sequence...

This way (trigger + sequence) is ok in normal case , but the problem is how to link back the sequence with the individual PK col .

    What????????????????

And how is this different than the previous thread? As in, why would you possibly start another thread with the exact same question?
