    You need a DISK ARRAY.

Your answers are not so much Oracle as platform specific, ie Unix (and then which-- Linux, AIX, HP-UX) or NT or whatever.

The basic is that you need OS level tools that allow the multiple systems to access the same files, coordinate locking between the instances and related housekeeping.

    still unclear

Sorry I am still not clear .
I have plenty of PC at my disposal.

To install RAC do I need to buy any specific hardware/software to create the shared disk?
Or if I have a spare PC which has a C and D drive
can I somehow utilize it for shared disk?

    Please excuse my ignorance

You need to be able to physically connect two computer to the same physical disk. The minimum configuration is where you have two computers each with their own SCSI card. Those SCSI cards hook up to the same physical disk, usually external in a disk array.
