Oracle 8.1.7 on Red Hat 7.3

    Hi guys,

I was trying to create a database on Redhat 7.3 and I got the renowned error ORA-3113-end of communication channel. My guess is due to the memory problem since I only have 80MB of RAM. Usually in Solaris, we have to set SHMMIN, SHMSEG, SEMVMX but I couldn't find those paremeters in Redhat. I could find the SHMMAX, SHMMNI and SEM.

It may sound like a child question but since I am new to linux I guess I am a "child" in linux. I just want to know whether somebody out there has a chance to play with redhat 7.3 and is willing to share their experience with me. I know there is a limit of 256MB RAM on installing 9.2.0 but I haven't heard such thing in 8.1.7.

Comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I have installed Oracle 8.1.7 on Redhat 7.3 before and it is rather easy as long as you follow the guide closely. Just take note that you need to download the following extra files before you start running the Oracle Installer. Good Luck!

    1. glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz (oracle patch)
    2. jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2

    Hi Sricky

How about your guess being wrong...well you see end of file communication channel could be dude to lotta of things...You should look at the alertlog file for more info...exactly at what stage are you getting this error ?Why not stop some services and try to create the database ?

Also try to have a look at freemem when you are creating the database

    regards

    thanks mooks and hrishy.

I think I will check those two files first which most likely be the cause of the problem.
I also doesn't strictly think that it is a memory problem but looking from the hardware limitation, it is something to be considered.

I will update you guys after I installed those two files.

If you want to know where exactly SHMMAX... parameters are located at in linux, here is the path.

Go to /usr/src/linux-2.4.2/include/asm directory. There you will find the files by name.. shmparam.h.

    Thanks
